After the armistice between Italy and the Allies on 8 September 1943, the largest massacre of Italian soldiers during the Second World War by German troops took place on the Ionian Islands. The article reconstructs the captivity experiences of the survivors of the Acqui Division through the use of institutional, memoir, diary and epistolary sources. Partcular attention is paid to the events of the "double captivity", first in German hands and then in Soviet hands. The analysis of the sources reveals the multiple identity of the veterans shaped within the different "seasons of remembrance" of Republican Italy.
